BabyCenter: Parents' happiness affects how big a family will grow

The birth of your first child is a joyous occasion. Unfortunately, this initial high can quickly fade as the reality of new parenthood sinks in.

Yet, parents who experience a significant drop in life happiness after their first baby is born are less likely to have a second child — even if they want another baby — according to a new study published in in the August issue of Demography.

In fact, for many new moms and dads in Germany, a drop in life satisfaction during the first year of new parenthood is even bigger than that caused by divorce, unemployment or death of a partner. This effect was especially pronounced in moms and dads who are well-educated and older, according to researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Germany.
